Life comes with all kinds of changes, and whether you're parents with a newly empty nest, moving to the city, or looking to save some money, we can help you find the urban townhome that’s right for you.
Moving is an adventure in and of itself, and adding downsizing as a factor can certainly cause added stress in your life. We're here to help you navigate downsizing to a smaller home with ease.
Know what you have. Before you begin packing and getting rid of things, take inventory of your belongings. You’ll find that as you take inventory, items that you didn’t remember existed will show up. With years of memories to sort through, get an early start in discovering what you have.
Be honest about what you need. Do you need to have four different crockpots? When was the last time you watched a VHS? Clear out any excess appliances, knick knacks, and get rid of the box of things you put aside when you said, “I might need this someday!”
Get the floor plan of your new digs. Once you have a clear idea of what all you have, begin planning out what there is ACTUALLY room for in your new living space.
Organize your belongings as you pack. In order to ensure that unpacking in your new home goes smoothly, organize your belongings in boxes as you pack.
Protip: Before you pay for brand new packing boxes, go around to local businesses and ask if they have any available to take. Generally, businesses get large boxes of supplies that then just get recycled.
Don’t wait to get started! One of the worst things you can do is wait until the last-minute to start planning and packing. Give yourself enough time to get ready and packed so that when moving day comes, you’ll be ready to go!
Be prepared to further downsize once you actually move in. Most of us like to hold onto things that we know we don’t need. Once you actually get moved in, you’ll discover the items that either don’t fit or don’t suit your needs anymore and are ready to be sold or donated.
Check out sites like OfferUp. These sites can be a great option for selling some of the larger-value items that you’re not ready to donate. If you would rather donate, check out your local charities and see what needs you might be able to fill.
